The Difference Between Refurbished and Second Hand

What is a refurbished product?

When most people hear the term ‘refurbished’, automatically the first question they probably think is, is refurbished considered second hand? Refurbished is still quite a new term many of us don’t understand, and when we see a product that is described as refurbished, we wonder, what does that even mean and which is better, refurbished or second-hand?

Are refurbished products still good?

Many people will see a Refurbished Item and a New Item and choose to buy a new one because they don’t understand refurbished, therefore spending much more money when it isn’t needed. However, the quality in refurbished products is just as good as brand-new and that’s why, in this blog, we dive into the definition of refurbished, what it is, and how it differs from second-hand.

Refurbished meaning – The distribution of products that have been previously returned to a company for any reason. They are then normally tested for functionality and faults before being sold to the public.

What are second-hand products?

Second-hand items are acquired after being used by another person previously. The second-hand tech isn't new and isn't being sold as new and usually, there is some form of evidence that the product has been used before. (This could be scratches or dents in the item.)

If these items are at all damaged, instead of being repaired or mended, sellers will simply notify customers the product is damaged upon ordering. There is no set life expectancy when ordering second-hand, as even the sellers themselves probably don’t know how long the product will last.

Finally, a product like a second-hand iPhone usually doens't have a warranty on them, which means if a product becomes damaged or faulty the customer will be covered. In this case, the customer would just lose the money rather than being able to claim warranty coverage.

Refurbished:

Refurbished, however, is a lot more professionally cared for, ensuring you are getting good quality for what you are paying for. Refurbished products are items that have been owned previously by another individual, but then have been repaired and restored to their original condition before being sold. Parts are carefully checked and tested before being sold, and if any damage is found that area is replaced.

The idea of refurbished technology is it's supposed to look new although it isn’t, so any software is updated in tech along with data being deleted. The life expectancy of refurbished products is also much higher than second hand, because refurbished products are in good condition. Typically, refurbished products can have a life expectancy of a couple of years minimum, very similar to the life expectancy of a brand-new product.
