Technical Glossary

Throughout this website you might find a few technical words you don't recognise or understand. On this page are links to pages that explain those words.

Memory and Storage

  • RAM (Random Access Memory)

RAM is the short-term memory of your computer or smartphone. It temporarily stores the data that your device is currently using, allowing it to be accessed quickly.

  • DDR5 RAM (Double Data Rate 5 Random Access Memory)

DDR5 is the latest generation of RAM technology, succeeding DDR4. It offers faster speeds, higher capacities, and improved power efficiency compared to its predecessor.

  • GDDR7 (Graphics Double Data Rate 7)

GDDR7 (Graphics Double Data Rate 7) is the latest evolution in memory technology for graphics cards.

  • SSD (Solid State Drive)

An SSD is a type of storage device that uses flash memory to store data. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) that use spinning disks and read/write heads, SSDs have no moving parts, making them faster, more durable, and less prone to physical damage.

  • HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is the traditional type of storage found in many computers. It's where all your files, photos, videos, and operating system live when they're not being actively used.

  • NVMe SSD (Non-Volatile Memory Express Solid State Drive)

An NVMe SSD is a high-performance storage device that uses the NVMe protocol to communicate with the computer's CPU over the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) bus.

  • SATA SSD (Serial AT Attachment Solid State Drive)

A SATA SSD is a type of solid-state drive that uses the SATA interface to connect to a computer's motherboard. SATA is a widely used bus interface for connecting storage devices like hard disk drives (HDDs) and optical drives to the motherboard.

  • SD Card

An SD card is a type of removable flash memory card used for storing data in portable devices such as digital cameras, smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

  • Flash Memory

Flash memory is a type of non-volatile storage technology that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. It retains data even when the power is turned off, making it ideal for use in portable devices and storage media.

  • NAND Flash

NAND flash is a type of non-volatile flash memory that is widely used in storage devices such as solid-state drives (SSDs), USB flash drives, and memory cards.

Processors

  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) / Processor

The CPU, or processor, is the "brain" of your computer or smartphone.

  • Tensor G5: Google's Own Chip for Pixel Phones

Tensor G5 is the fifth generation of Google's custom-designed chip for its Pixel smartphones.

  • GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)

A GPU is a specialised processor designed to handle graphics-related tasks.

  • GPU VRAM

GPU VRAM is a specialised type of memory that is built into graphics cards.

  • Ryzen AI: Bringing Artificial Intelligence to Your Laptop

Ryzen AI is a new technology from AMD that integrates a dedicated AI engine directly into their Ryzen 7040 series mobile processors.

  • Snapdragon X Elite: The AI-Powered Mobile Powerhouse

Snapdragon X Elite is a cutting-edge series of chips (modems) from Qualcomm, designed to revolutionise laptops and other mobile devices.
