Flash memory is a type of non-volatile storage technology that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. It retains data even when the power is turned off, making it ideal for use in portable devices and storage media. Flash memory is composed of interconnected memory cells, each capable of storing one or more bits of data. These cells are organised into a grid-like structure, allowing for quick access and modification of data. Flash memory comes in two main types: NOR flash, which is suitable for storing code and executing it directly, and NAND flash, which is better suited for data storage and is commonly used in SSDs, USB drives, and memory cards. Flash memory is known for its durability, low power consumption, and fast read access times, although it has slower write speeds compared to volatile memory like RAM.

Imagine flash memory as a vast city grid with numerous buildings. Each building represents a memory cell, and the apartments within the buildings represent the bits of data stored in each cell. The city's infrastructure, such as roads and signage, allows for quick navigation and access to specific buildings (or memory cells) when needed. When you want to update the information in an apartment (or modify the data in a cell), you must first clear out the entire building (or erase the whole block of cells) before writing the new information. This process is similar to how flash memory handles data modification, where entire blocks must be erased before new data can be written. Despite this slight inconvenience, the organised layout of the city (or flash memory) enables fast and efficient access to your data, even when the power is turned off.
