RAM (Random Access Memory)

RAM is the short-term memory of your computer or smartphone. It temporarily stores the data that your device is currently using, allowing it to be accessed quickly. The more RAM your device has, the more tasks it can handle simultaneously without slowing down. When you open an app or file, it is loaded into the RAM for quick access. However, unlike your device's storage (such as a hard drive or SSD), RAM is volatile, meaning that it only retains data when the device is powered on.

RAM Explained Simply

Think of RAM as a student's desk in a classroom. Just like a student takes out the books, notes, and stationery needed for the current lesson and places them on their desk for quick access, your device loads the apps, files, and data it needs to perform current tasks into the RAM. The bigger the desk (or the more RAM your device has), the more items (or apps and files) the student (or your device) can work with at the same time without getting cluttered or slowed down. However, just like the student needs to put everything back in their bag at the end of the class, the data in the RAM is cleared when the device is turned off.

Here's what makes RAM special:

  • Fast access: Information in RAM can be reached almost instantly by your computer's processor, which is like the brain. This lets you work smoothly without delays.
  • Temporary storage: Unlike your computer's hard drive, RAM doesn't store things permanently. Once you turn off your computer, the information in RAM is wiped clean. This is why you need to save your work regularly!

How much RAM do I need?

The more RAM you have, the more things your computer can juggle at once. If you mostly browse the web and use basic programs, you won't need as much RAM as someone who edits videos or plays complex games. Upgrading your RAM is a great way to improve your computer's performance, especially on a refurbished machine.
