Is Apple Losing Popularity?

Is Apple Losing Popularity?

Charlotte Bolton |

Apple was first founded in 1976, although you may have first heard about them back in 2007 when they released their giant success, the most popular smartphone and technology device of all time, the iPhone. Since the beginning, Apple has stood out for its innovative concepts, premium quality, and durability. In 2015, the company became the largest publicly traded corporation in the world by market capitalization. Again, in 2017, Apple revolutionised smartphones by releasing its button-free phone, the iPhone X.

Currently, Apple are planning to release their latest smartphone, the iPhone 17. Alongside their iconic smartphone series, they also sell laptops, computers, smartwatches, vision headsets and so much more. But in this blog, we aren't discussing Apple's clear success, we're here to talk about their potential downfall. Is Apple's downfall getting closer? Here's our dive into whether Apple are losing popularity.

Is Apple losing its popularity?

So why do we think Apple are no longer the global giant it used to be? Well, let's look at the statistics. In 2024, it was revealed that Apple iPhone sales had been 'slumping' despite still being classed as top position in the smartphone world, and they sold 5% fewer iPhone globally and lost ground to Chinese rivals in the fourth quarter of 2024. Moreover, 2024 seems to have been a poor year for Apple, the iPhone slipped to 18% worldwide Market Share. Let's compare this to previous years.

  • 2024 - 18% market share
  • 2023 - 19% market share
  • 2022 - 23% market share
  • 2021 - 27% market share

As you can see, the market share of Apple has been dropping as the years go on; it's clear this will happen again in 2025. But why could Apple be on such a downfall? Let's take a look.

Why is Apple losing customers?

There are many reasons why Apple could be having a rough patch in terms of popularity. To begin, the cost of living crisis. People are trying to spend as little as possible. And as we know, Apple products can be incredibly pricey, whilst they certainly make up for it when it comes to quality, we know not everyone can afford to continually update their Apple tech. This smoothly rolls into our second point, thanks to 'lengthened replacement cycles', users are choosing to wait to upgrade their tech. This could be to either wait for a newer edition of the tech to release or to save money where possible, but consumers are holding onto their iPhones for longer periods, opting to delay upgrades. Like we mentioned earlier in this blog, 2024 did seem to be a poor year for Apple financially, statistically... and when it comes to product releases. In 2024, Apple released the infamous Apple Vision Pro, which we know was considered a global failure.

Conclusion:

We certainly don't think that Apple are going away anytime soon, for a long, long time in fact. But we do think the drop in Apple's popularity has begun to become noticeable. What do you think? Are you a loyal Apple follower for life, or could you be swayed to the world of Android? Let us know!

The constant need to upgrade the phone for rubbish new emoticons etc and the failure of Apple’s AI in comparison with Google is a good reason too. Apple seems to think it’s Iphone users want silly gimmicks when what we want is a clear and simple system that is fast and reliable with features that are actually useful!
