Tech Trends We're Letting Go of in 2024

What are the tech trend predictions for 2024?

The tech industry has been moving rapidly recently, especially within the last few years. Thanks to the introduction of AI, the revival of the flip phones and major tech companies racing to keep ahead of the competition, we have seen some brilliant improvements in the industry. But with such rapid changes so often… what tech are we leaving behind and forgetting about?

We are here to analyse the upcoming tech we have been loving recently and compare it to past tech that we could be letting go of in 2024. Let’s compare our current tech world to the vintage tech we had a decade ago. Take a look at our tech predictions for 2024 now!

Smartphones

Are gaming consoles becoming obsolete?

The likes of the iconic DS and original Game Boy console are now simply known as nostalgic handheld retro game consoles which we mostly buy now as collectables and decorations. With the increasing popularity and performance abilities on intense consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, we assumed that it was the end for portable gaming. But, it appears there has been a spike in the sale of portable consoles (possibly started by the release of the children’s game console Nintendo Switch in 2017), with a lot of big companies now creating more handheld gaming consoles which make gaming easier.

We think that with cheap game consoles like the PS Portable, Nintendo Switch and the Backbone One, we could see a new era for gaming. Moving away from the stationary console-built gaming and focussing more on portable play. There are also rumours the Nintendo Switch 2 will be releasing late 2024 or early 2025 which we can already assume will be a huge success.

What is the future scope of fitness trackers?

Another tech trend we can’t see lasting too long is fitness trackers. Yes, they are great for keeping up with your health and fitness progress and also come at great prices, but they can easily be replaced by smartwatches. Smartwatches do everything fitness trackers do and more, they can be personal assistants, and fitness assistants, help track your data plus offer many other features that aren’t health-related like photography, access to social media and of course… the time.

A smartwatch is a phone you can wear, and many big brands like Apple and Samsung offer them in stunning colours and at incredible prices. What’s better? You can sync them to your phone so all your mobile data will automatically become available on your watch.

Are tablets no longer popular?

Tablets are another tech option we think will fade out due to the introduction of folding tech. With the Galaxy Fold phones which can fold out to the size of a mini tablet, people no longer need to purposefully buy a tablet as their smartphones now act like one. Big tablets can take up too much space, plus the fact they don’t fold there is always the chance the screen could become damaged or crack. There is also the ongoing rumour Samsung are creating a triple folding smartphone which would go from a regular mobile size to a tablet device, meaning you would have the option to either use a tablet or smartphone.

New rumoured tech releasing in 2024:

  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • Ring Home Drone
  • Rollable Phone
  • Triple Folding Smartphone
  • Samsung Galaxy Ring
  • Humane AI Pin

What year will smartphones be obsolete?

Next up is a piece of tech you would never even consider but is very possible. A smartphone. Although almost all of us use a smartphone daily, and the fact around 90% of the population uses a smartphone, we still have the feeling we could see the decline of them shortly. The cost of living crisis has seriously made us all consider what we spend our money on, what we need to spend our money on and what we WANT to spend our money on. Lots of people are leaning towards second-hand or budget phones now, as these offer the same performance just at a fraction of their normal price.

And it’s not just down to price why we think the classic smartphone will become unpopular, it’s their design choice. Flip phones have gained wide praise recently with fans loving their dual screen ideal for multitasking and the fact they can easily be folded up and save space. The smartphone is simply losing its practicality, and lots of new tech designs are being released that seem to fit the bill perfectly.
Could we even see the complete removal of smartphone technology? Maybe VR and AI will be the new smart tech or could we even see a smartphone projector?

Non-sustainable technology in 2024:

Similar to our point about smartphones, we think brand new phones will lose their popularity charm also. Sustainability has been a major rise amongst tech brands within the last few years, trying to push for that healthy environment cause. We think that instead of buying a new phone the second it is available, tech lovers will begin to wait until second-hand and refurbished options of the phone become available at a much lower price. And we know the place to be to find those devices!

Envirofone is great when it comes to sustainability, offering refurbished products that have high-quality performance yet super low prices! They offer refurbished smartphones, laptops, tablets and more. Plus, with Envirofone Trade, hand in your old device and get cash back in return!

What is the future of computer monitors?

And finally, the last piece of tech we are letting go of in 2024 is computers and monitors. As we mentioned earlier, portable gaming has become huge again, and the introduction of VR has completely taken over the world. We think there will be no more computer-based work/gaming with people finding alternative ways to work/play. With tech like the Apple Vision Pro releasing, you can join business calls, complete tasks, play video games and more in a completely immersive environment.
